What to Expect & Why Lobby Day Matters

Lobby Day, which will take place on the final day of the Summit for Religious Freedom (SRF), is an exciting and rare opportunity for participants to have face-to-face conversations on Capitol Hill with everyone from congressional staff to members of Congress about the importance of church-state separation! This is an awesome opportunity to share your own personal story about why this issue is so important to you and increase members of Congress understanding and support of our mission. Research overwhelmingly shows that one of the most effective ways to build or increase support for the issues you care about with your elected official is to meet with them and their staff in their office.

During our inaugural Lobby Day in 2020, supporters like you attended meetings with members of Congress, including U.S. Reps. Anna Eshoo (D-CA), David Price (D-NC), Marc Pocan (D-WI), and  Danny Davis (D-IL). We had 104 total lobby meetings with members and staff.

What if I've never lobbied before?

No prior lobbying experience needed! The day before Lobby Day, we will be leading a training at SRF to teach you how to lobby, give you specific talking points and answer questions you might have. If you are nervous about attending meetings alone, don’t worry. We will create groups based on where people live, so if you have a friend or family member who might be interested and lives near you, get them to sign up and lobby together!

Who will we meet with?

We will schedule your meetings for you, and we will try our best to ensure that everyone who is participating has a meeting with the office of at least one of their members of Congress. Your lobby group may also include people who live in neighboring congressional districts and you’ll have meetings in those offices, too. Your story and presence has a positive impact on those Congress members and it’s a great way for you to get practice lobbying and to support others in your state.

What should we do to prepare?

No need to prepare anything just yet! Closer to Lobby Day, we will prepare some things to read, answer any questions you may have, and share information about our training.
